Symptoms of Mesothelioma

The two most commonly diagnosed forms of asbestos-related cancer, pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma, become present in the body in different ways because they affect either the lungs or the abdomen, respectively.

Pleural Mesothelioma

Early symptoms of the pleural form of mesothelioma, which impacts the chest area, may be difficult to diagnose and can result in delayed detection.

Pleural Mesothelioma symptoms often mimic those of viral pneumonia, which may include:

  • Persistent Cough
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Chest Pain

One of the most common symptoms is pleural effusion, or accumulation of fluid between the lung lining and the chest cavity, which causes shortness of breath and sometimes pain. Approximately 60 percent of the time, only the right lung shows these signs when detected through an x-ray or CT scan. Fever, night sweats and weight loss are other less common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Peritoneal Mesothelioma, the abdominal type of mesothelioma may be present in the form of disorders in the mid-section such as:

  • Pain
  • Incresed Girth
  • Fluid Buildup
  • Mass
  • Distention

Fever, weight loss, fatigue, anemia and digestive disturbances are other possible symptoms. Often non-specific symptoms appear months before diagnosis, and peritoneal mesothelioma is only detected when a patient visits the doctor for other issues such as gallbladder, hernia or pelvic mass. This less common form of mesothelioma may also present 10 to 20 years earlier than pleural mesothelioma.
